Meet

Debrahlee McInnis

Born out of the Flower Child counter-culture movement, Debrahlee McInnis’s textile art is colourful and fun

What else would you expect from a woman who named her company cheeky fibre?

DebrahLee’s eclectic artistic leanings are influenced by nature, music, art, fashion and travel. She has worked professionally in textiles for 25 years. Debrahlee has been sewing since the age of four when she began creating custom clothing for her Barbie dolls

As a teen, Debrahlee made her own clothing and outfits for her younger sister, as well as those of her own children when she became a mother

Today, DebrahLee’s fibre creations are multi-faceted. Her imagination leads to artistry in unique bags, coats, dresses, cushions, wall art, quilts and outdoor art pieces. There is a playfulness to her creations, making each piece unique

Debrahlee’s lifelong love of textiles and her dedication to creativity has borne a versatile fibre artist. She loves marking cloth, be it commercial, vintage, women’s fair trade, ethnic or handmade fabrics by using dyes, screen printing, stitches or transferring photos onto the fabric and creating distinctive pieces of art

DebrahLee takes joy in turning one-dimensional fabric into three-dimensional fun

Meet Murchie

Three year-old Cavlier King Charles Spaniel Murchie is an essential team member at cheeky fibre

If you are lucky enough to visit, you will be greeted by Murchie, a tri-coloured King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, who is full of character and sweetness, and who keeps DebrahLee company while her imagination and hands manipulate fibre into original artistry

Chief Of Operations, Morale Management and Quality of Comfort Control are Murchie’s main roles

DebrahLee draws inspiration from years of travel, her love of nature, her dreams and the books she reads

DebrahLee has collected fabrics from around the world and intersperses them throughout her work. Skills shared by Guatemalan weavers, as well the colours and textures that mirror Central America, are reflected in DebrahLee’s artistry

Like the connectedness found in the natural world she loves, her pieces influence each other. Debrahlee also uses leftover fabric from previous projects to inspire her new creations, bringing an ecologically sensitivity to her work

Each piece of Debrahlee’s art is unique and tells a story - her words are the markings she makes on cloth by a needle pulling thread
